Infant ADHD or Other Problem Question?
My son is now 11 months old. Since the day he was born, he has been extremely hyperactive. From day one until about 8 months old, he took only two 20 min naps a day. Now he takes about two one hour naps a day. He has always woken up about 5 times a night and continues to do so. During the day, he never seems tired and goes all the time. He began crawling at 5 months and walking at 8 months. He now runs everywhere. He will go up to anyone and everything, loves attention, loves throwing things off tables onto the ground, enjoys climbing up anything, jumping off things, squirms, has restless legs when going to sleep, bangs his head on walls, and sometimes hits his head with his toys (he thinks it is funny). The boy never stops. However, about 15-20 times a day I catch him staring into space for about 10-15 seconds at a time. He can be running across the room and then stop like a deer in headlights and just stare at a spot on the wall. I can get in his face and clap or talk really loud, and it doesn’t faze him.
He is the happiest and most loving little boy I know. He loves to hug, kiss, smile, and squeal. He loves to ride piggy back around the house, and loves to be held (as long as we are showing him new things and asking him to help us with stuff, he LOVES learning). He will sit still for about 1-2 minutes at a time every now and then to watch TV or read a book.
He had one EEG for a seizure in Dec, but it was normal. He will have a 6 hour EEG on Monday to try to see if the blank stares are seizure related. In the meantime, I thought I would ask other parents if they have had similar issues, what the cause was, and how they are handling their child.
Emily - that is my son to a tee!!!
He has also been throwing full blown temper tantrums since he was 9 months old. He throws his head back and falls to the floor crying when he doesn’t get his way.
My son has sensory processing disorder. there are hyer-sensitive kids (who are sensitive to touch) and hypo-sensitive kids) crave touch and motions. My son bangs his head, plays rough and tumble, loves being swung up and around in the air. pushes furniture around the house, enjoys being squeezed when hugged, and as an infant enjoyed butt patting (pretty hard actually) or flipping his binky to get to sleep. You can ask you pediatrician to have an ocupational therapist to evaluate him. My son was about 11 months old when he was diagnosed.

I don’t know anything about the seizures, but I can assure you, that his sleeping patterns and his activity level are not all that unusual. Let the child run as much as he wants, and take him outdoors a lot, for a maximum of physical activity. He’ll mellow out eventually.

i dont know alot about seizures but other than that he sounds normal, happy little boy lol.his sleeping patterns are normal for his age and will regulate with time.my little girl is 2 and was always a very active and involved and loved rough and tumble and running around.but in doing so she is very advanced for her age.its good to let children run and play and if he is sociable and loving i dont think you have anything to worry about.
